Jaane Tu Revisited

My post on the music of the film Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na got me quite a bit of traffic…and now that has compelled me to post my views on the film itself! 😉

I think I speak for myself and many others like me when I say I absolutely loooooved the film!

It was just the right blend of teenage masti, drama, youthful vibrance, comedy, action and our very own Bollywood Tadka

Comparisons with other such films, with the lead pair intially refusing to accept that they are in love, and then ultimately coming together in the end are inevitable, but Jaane Tu was different. More in terms of the implementation, screenplay and the superbly etched out characters. Not just Jai aka Rats(Imran Khan) or Aditi aka Meow(Genelia) but all their friends, parents, and the respective fiances .

The film also takes us 35 years back, to another romantic flick called Aa Gale Lag Ja (1973). Directed by Manmohan Desai and produced by A. Nadiadwala, the film starred Shashi Kapoor, Sharmila Tagore and Shatrughan Sinha with music by R.D Burman.

So now what does this have to do with Abbas Tyrewala’s 2008 film Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na? Well, not only does this film borrow it’s title from one of Aa Gale Lag Ja’s extremely popular songs, but also has its lead actors breaking into that song quite a few times during the film itself. So for those who haven’t seen Jaane Tu yet, and even those who have, next time you find it hard trying to recollect where was it that you heard “Tera mujhse hai pehla ka naata koi, yunhin nahin dil lubhata koi..”, you’d need to think no more.

Aa Gale Lag Ja has Sharmila Tagore and Shashi Kapoor playing young lovers whose breezy romance warms up on the skating rink but turns tragic when circumstances force them to part even though Sharmila finds out she is pregnant. The film has a touching performance from Master Tito who plays their handicapped child ,who re-unites the couple. Melodies from R D Burman include ‘Vaada Karo Nahin Chodoge’ and two versions of ‘Tera Mujhse Hai Pehle’.

Coming back to Jaane Tu, the opening shot of the film sees 3 friends in the back of a car singing “tera mujhse hai pehle ka naata koi”, much to the annoyance of the girl sitting in the front. Two more instances, as the film progresses see Jai singh Rathore, (the Rathore from Ranjhour) singing the song, first simply as a demo of what it would be like when he sings it for the girl of his dreams and the other in the amazingly cute and unforgettable Airport Scene, where he’s being convicted as a singing terrorist and is requested by the Airport Security head never to sing again!

It’s a beautiful film and a beautiful song, if you haven’t already searched up the lyrics for yourself, they go something like this:

Tera Mujhse Hai Pehle Ka Naata Koi
Yoonhi Nahin Dil Lubhaata Koi
Tera Mujhse Hai Pehle Ka Naata Koi
Yoonhi Nahin Dil Lubhaata Koi

Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na
Maane Tu Ya Maane Na
Tera Mujhse Hai Pehle Ka Naata Koi
Yoonhi Nahin Dil Lubhaata Koi

Dhuaan Dhuaan Tha Vo Samaan
Yahan Vahan Jaane Kahan
Tu Aur Main Kahin Milay Thay Pehle
Dekha Tujhe To Dil Ne Kaha

Tera Mujhse Hai Pehle Ka Naata Koi
Yoonhi Nahin Dil Lubhaata Koi
Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na
Maane Tu Ya Maane Na

Tu Bhi Rahi Mere Liye
Main Bhi Raha Tere Liye
Pehle Bhi Main Tujhko Baahon Mein Leke
Jhooma Kiya Aur Jhooma Kiya

Tera Mujhse Hai Pehle Ka Naata Koi
Yoonhi Nahin Dil Lubhaata Koi
Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na
Maane Tu Ya Maane Na

Dekho Abhi Khona Nahin
Kabhi Juda Hona Nahin
Ab Khel Mein Yoohin Rahenge Hum Dono
Vaada Raha Ye Is Shaam Ka

Tera Mujhse Hai Pehle Ka Naata Koi
Yoonhi Nahin Dil Lubhaata Koi
Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na
Maane Tu Ya Maane Na

Tera Mujhse Hai Pehle Ka Naata Koi
Yoonhi Nahin Dil Lubhaata Koi
